IELTS VS CELPIP
For Immigration to Canada
If you’re planning to immigrate to Canada, one of the immigration requirements is a certain language proficiency in French or English. To prove your English language proficiency, you can take one of two tests: either the IELTS test or the CELPIP test.
CELPIP is the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program and IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. Both are designed to assess English language proficiency, and both tests are used for study, work and immigration.
In this article, you’ll find the information you need to help you figure out which is the best test for you, for your move to Canada! A vital difference between the two exams is that CELPIP is an entirely computer-based test, meaning that all sections of the test are delivered by computer.
In IELTS, the Reading, Writing and Listening sections are now available as paper-based or computer-based tests; however, the Speaking Test is done in-person, in a separate sitting.
Making Your Choice
Location and Availability
Both CELPIP and IELTS testing centres are accessible in Dubai. There are testing centres in various locations in Dubai, however, there is currently only one Exam Preparation and Testing House center for CELPIP, located in Silicon Oasis.
When we compare the difficulty of the CELPIP vs IELTS tests, there’s no clear difference between the two. Both tests are challenging. However, certain sections can be considered easier or more difficult by individual test-takers.
Here are a few differences that can be noted:
- The CELPIP test includes spell check in the writing component, which could be useful for some candidates.
- The IELTS Speaking section includes an in-person conversation with an examiner, while in the CELPIP Speaking section, your voice is recorded on the computer. Some candidates prefer talking to a live person, while others feel more comfortable without the face-to-face interaction.
- The CELPIP test uses Canadian speakers, while the IELTS test includes native speakers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US in their Listening section. Some candidates may find the CELPIP Listening section more understandable.
- You will be assessed based on the writing marking criteria which are both also very similar. The difference will be in the format. In the IELTS test, candidates are required to write an essay, which is not required in the CELPIP test. Some candidates may find essay writing more challenging.
