How to speak more like a native English speaker?
Tips and tricks to speak more like a native English speaker.
The following 7 tips and tricks can help you to become more fluent in English quickly.
1. FIND A CONVERSATION PARTNER
The best way to speak better is to speak more! Commit yourself to practicing often and with as many different people as possible. If you have a few friends or colleagues that you can have English conversations, then try to make it a habit to speak with them. If not, then meet up with someone else who is studying English or find a language exchange partner, or join an online community of learners.
2. LISTEN AND READ
Speaking skills will improve when you listen and read more. Watch movies or series; listen to music, the radio, and to podcasts. Read books, magazines, newspapers, and blogs.
When listening and reading, find new and interesting expressions, slang* terms, and synonyms, write down this new material, and research anything you are not familiar with. Watching movies or series will also help you to understand many language expressions better and get used to more colloquial* and conversational forms of English, which sounds more native-like and natural.
3. START A VOCABULARY BOOK OF USEFUL WORDS
Either in a notebook or on your mobile device, start making a list of useful words and phrases. Every time you hear or see a new word or phrase, note it down.
Remember: Do not just focus on the word itself, but search for its collocations, synonyms, and phrases in which it is used so that you know how to use the new word or phrase correctly. Then, start using them in conversation.
Remember: the main thing is having the confidence to use new words. It is ok to make mistakes; it’s how we learn to improve!
4. RECORD YOURSELF
Recording your own voice and listening to your recordings can be very helpful to realize any mistakes you are making in speaking English. It is a very useful way to improve your speaking skills, and pronounce English words like a native English speaker. Even better, share your recordings with your English teacher or English-speaking partners or friends and have them give you feedback.
5. PREPARE CHEAT SHEETS FOR EVERYDAY ENGLISH
Prepare a cheat sheet for quick reference. You can stick these on your walls or near your desk. Are you going to the supermarket, the bank, a restaurant, the doctor, or for a hair appointment? Before your appointment, research vocabulary related to your appointment and prepares a cheat sheet of common and useful phrases for each situation before you go. Using real-life English in these situations can really help you to sound more like a native English speaker.
6. PRACTICE ON THE PHONE
Phone conversations for English learners can be challenging because we cannot see the other person’s body language or watch their mouth move. To feel more confident on the phone, start practicing small phone conversations with friends, then move on to more challenging calls like making appointments or inquiries. Try role-playing phone conversations for different situations with your English-speaking partners and friends.
7. SPEAK TO YOURSELF
It is ok, no one will think you are crazy; this is a great way to boost your confidence in speaking English! You can do it at home; when you are getting ready, cooking, having a shower, or doing any daily routine; just start speaking to yourself. Have a question-and-answer conversation or repeat new phrases. This really helps if you do it regularly!
